Windows Vista SP1 (RC) available next week

Next week the first Service Pack RC 1 for Vista will be available for download. Here are some features:

• The size of the standalone installers have decreased significantly. For example, the standalone installer packages consisting of all 36 languages (x86 and x64 chip architectures) are smaller by over 50%. The standalone installer packages consisting of just the 5 languages (again, x86 and x64) slated for initial release are more than 30% smaller in size.
• The required amount of disc space for SP1 installation has also decreased significantly. Furthermore, with the RC, if more space is required to install SP1, an error message will now display exactly how much space is needed to complete the installation.
• Previous SP1 versions left behind a directory of files that wasn't needed after installation and occupied about 1GB of space; the RC includes automatic disk clean-up to remove this directory.
• Installation reliability has been improved based on bug reports and error codes reported from Windows Update (thanks, Beta testers!). Testing shows that these improvements have significantly increased the proportion of successful installations of the RC.
• We've improved the user experience of installing SP1 via Windows Update. During the Beta release, users installed without much guidance from Windows Update. The RC now contains a series of screens with detailed information on SP1.

P2P, la santa alleanza tra ISP e major

Roma - Se in Italia il gran lavoro di raccolta degli indirizzi IP da parte di Logistep può destare allarme e preoccupazione, nel resto dell'Europa e negli States la situazione per il file sharing peggiora ad un ritmo persino superiore: in Francia parte il primo procedimento voluto dai produttori contro gli sviluppatori di software di scambio file, mentre negli USA AT&T è il primo provider ad allearsi con RIAA, MPAA e affini nella ricerca e nel filtraggio dei contenuti illegali distribuiti in rete.

Il primo vero test legale della discussa legge francese sul diritto d'autore DADVSI è "merito" dell'associazione dei produttori SPPF, Société des Producteurs de Phonogrammes for you Francophones, che ha denunciato gli autori dei software P2P Azureus, Shareaza e Morpheus come responsabili della distribuzione e condivisione illegale di contenuti per mezzo dei suddetti programmi.

La normativa DADVSI recentemente approvata prevede infatti che chi sviluppa software palesemente pensato per uso illecito sia passibile di 3 anni di galera e 300mila euro di multa. Non bastasse, SPPF vuole fare cassa e chiede 20,3 milioni di euro come risarcimento danni.

L'iniziativa francese va dunque molto oltre la celebre sentenza Grokster vs. MGM, che due anni fa ha ridisegnato gli scenari legali per i programmi di condivisione negli Stati Uniti. In quel caso gli sviluppatori sono stati puniti perché promuovevano in maniera palese l'utilizzo illegale dei propri software: le nuove norme d'Oltralpe consentono di perseguire anche quei casi in cui non è praticamente possibile per gli sviluppatori fare una distinzione netta tra download lecito e illecito.

Ironia della sorte, come suggerisce Zeropaid l'iniziativa di SPPF si abbatte proprio su quei soggetti, Azureus e BitTorrent, che si sono dimostrati più malleabili nei confronti dell'industria assecondandone i desideri di favorire gli scambi legali e protetti dei contenuti in rete. Procedendo su questa strada, l'unico risultato effettivo che i produttori otterranno sarà quello di spingere sempre più verso l'underground telematico i client di P2P, stroncando sul nascere questi primi timidi tentativi di conversione alla distribuzione autorizzata.

Di vero e proprio controllo globale del traffico di rete si parla invece negli Stati Uniti, dove il colosso AT&T ha annunciato lo sviluppo e l'impiego di una tecnologia teoricamente in grado di mettere al bando dal proprio network film, musica e software piratati qualunque sia la rete o il protocollo attraverso cui essi vengano distribuiti. La mossa di AT&T non arriva a sorpresa ma è parte della nuova strategia seguita dalla società, che con il servizio U-verse si propone anche come broadcaster di contenuti piuttosto che come semplice gestore della connettività e dell'infrastruttura di rete.

Red Hat is fast-tracking reseller accreditation to anyone with an Intel Premier or Associate badge.

It's free of charge too and it means that system builders don't have to spend months to qualify for Red Hat approval. This is a long-tail, be-nice-to-the-little-guys initiative, supporting white-box builders who slap RHEL (Red Hat Enterprise Linux) onto standard-config Intel servers. Before today, Red Hat would request a fee from any builder who wanted certifying, but that comes across as a little short-sighted in days like these, when competitors seem to be fighting to star in Kill Red Hat first.

No channel program is complete without a name: this one is called the Global Channel Acceleration Program, and it requires free enrollment in the Intel Enterprise Server Acceleration Alliance (ESAA) and Red Hat Ready program.
